Now presented by Fine and Dandy as a lovely, hand worked and carved piece on a polished steel plinth. A free standing ornamental addition to any living space.
A Charkha is a traditional Indian table top or floor based spinning wheel. The charkha works with a drive wheel being turned by hand, while the yarn is spun off the tip of the spindle. Mahatma Ghandi incorporated it into his teachings as both a symbol and a tool of the Indian independence movement. He hoped the charkha would help the people of India achieve self-sufficiency (Swadeshi) and therefore independence. In his teachings Ghandi also used the Charkha as a symbol of interdependence because the spinning wheel was at the centre of a network of cotton growers, carders, weavers, distributors and users.
We are now very happy to celebrate that connection with you for this lovely piece.
